to descend into the abyss of himself.
I tried my best to look upbeat the next day but it's hard when you've spent the night warding off spooky occurrences and losing sleep in the process.
The benzo Dr. Wallace prescribed for the night terrors helped and Gizmo did his best to alleviate my anxiety by staying close to my face with his tiny one pound body. The little guy did help in distracting me and I had to admit he was way too cute even for a kitten, still, I was dragging my butt and needed the afternoon coffee break to help me through.
Beatrice spotted me in the lounge and brought coffee over and sat with me.
"Still fighting the wars?" she asked sympathetically.
"Guess it shows, huh? Never was good at hiding feelings."
"I get what you're going through, Ethan. Yeah, I know, everyone says it, but I actually mean it. I do know, because I went through something very similar myself."
"You were harassed in the workplace?" I asked in astonishment.
"Don't be too surprised. I may look put together now, but I was a mess five years ago. It happens and sometimes you don't think you're going to get through it."
"But you seem so on top of things. I can't imagine you struggling with similar circumstances."
She looked me straight in the eye. "What if I told you the harassment got so bad I had to quit my job and didn't work for a year?"
"Phew!" I whistled softly, "that bad, huh?"
"I thought I was going out of my mind. I was being stalked even while at work and when I was home, my house seemed like a scene out of The Exorcist. I barely survived."
"How did you get through―what made the difference?"
"I was working for Armitage Marketing and we serviced only high-end clients. The agency was a full-service operation and retained a corporate security firm. The head of the agency was a man called Garth Kane who was ex RCMP and CSIS. He specialized in security frauds but had extensive experience in policing,"
"Wow, he sounds like a combination of CIA spy and special forces."
"He was my saviour when I was at my lowest point. Turns out one of the women in the agency was undermining me and subverting my work. This woman actually planted spyware on my computer and was using electronic surveillance to snoop on me at home."
"That's really scary and bizarre."
"I can put you in touch with Garth and he can do an assessment by checking all your digital devices and scanning your home for electronic eavesdropping devices. It will be well worth it to be reassured that you are physically protected."
"I agree. This Garth seems like just the person I need to sort out what's been happening and hopefully he can make suggestions about how to protect myself going forward."
"I'll give him your business card and he'll get in touch with you. You won't be sorry, Ethan―peace of mind is precious and you don't realize how vital it is until you lose it."
Beatrice's words encouraged me and the prospect of getting expert help totally reassured me. All I wanted was to live simply and to be able to sleep in peace in my own bed at night―that didn't seem too much to ask.
I only hoped Garth Kane was as good a spy as my invisible stalker.
