Struga, one small town on the shores of Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia

Hello to all travellers everywhere

I hope you are well, and I look forward to discovering from you new experiences from the journeys you share in this community.

Today I want to go together to Struga, a small town on the shores of Lake Ohrid.

How did we get here?

Early in the morning we left home with Struga as our midway destination, we had a distance of about 800km which we should have covered in about ten hours (but you know how it is, the account at home doesn't match the one in the market), the final destination of this trip being one of the resorts in Albania.

The route to Macedonia is not foreign to me, I have been on this route before when I was in Paralia Katerini in Greece.

How was the journey there?

Overall, I can say that the road was very good in terms of infrastructure, but we had a more unpleasant experience when we had to cross the border between Serbia and North Macedonia (I will tell you about this experience a little later).

The roads in Romania I know have been the same for twenty years, since I entered Serbia the situation has changed a little, but it was good, the route through Serbia was mostly done on the highway, it should be noted that the Serbs do not have a toll set for a period of time, they how many kilometers of highway you use you pay, they have at certain intervals on the motorway some machines where you get your ticket and after a certain distance you pass other barriers but with small offices where you have to pay the toll (the price depends on how many kilometers you have driven on the motorway, it's good to know that you can pay the toll by card).

The surprise came when we arrived at the border between Serbia and North Macedonia, the first shock was when I saw the column of cars that measured over two and a half kilometers, I kept hoping that we would cross quickly as when we crossed from Romania to Serbia, but it was not so, we stayed in that column of cars in customs for about four hours, staying here for so long my patience was gone, my nerves were stretched to the limit, I couldn't see myself crossing the border, initially we made a plan with the time we would arrive in Struga, but nothing of what we planned was respected because of the time lost in customs (I must tell you that the customs officers didn't feel like working, they were very bored, this I tell you from my own experience, when my turn came at the control they barely made a gesture when they took my ID card to check me).

We crossed the border into North Macedonia.

Again North Macedonia amazes me with those hundreds of tunnels dug in the hills, a real pleasure to drive through this country, and here is the same toll system on the highway as in Serbia, the more highway you use the more you pay.

The journey that was supposed to take about ten hours we barely managed to do in fifteen and a half hours with all the stops we made, but by the end we arrived safely at the hotel we had booked.

Our plan was to arrive during the day and explore the city a bit, but we arrived at night and yet as tired as we were we couldn't resist and took a short walk to see the city in the evening.

The hotel where we are staying is right next to the Drim river (the Drim river divides Struga in two) so we started exploring with the beaches here which impressed us, then we walked among the terraces on the lakeside, a very interesting area, I didn't expect to find anything here, so we decided to visit these places the next day in the morning to see what they look like during the day, we were a bit tired so we stopped at a restaurant on the lake and ate pasta carbonara then we retired to the hotel.

I slept like a bear, motionless.

The next day we woke up early in the morning and wanted to have breakfast, but surprise restaurants open after ten o'clock, so we had to walk around town to avoid waiting for nothing until the restaurants opened.

Good thing I made the decision to visit the city before, so I discovered beautiful beaches, I also met some fishermen, the lakeshore was full of fishing boats, the cliff near the lake where you could sit on a bench and look towards the lake.

As in almost all the big cities we visited we discovered a bridge whose sides were full of locks, here the lovers were united or strengthened their vows of love, also here the inhabitants went out to move on the river Drim with kayak or on the board with paddle, a start of the day with outdoor movement, something amazing.

It was already past 11 o'clock and we were hungry so we stopped at a restaurant on the banks of the river Drim where we had a traditional breakfast.

The breakfast was very good, we were fed up, so we packed our bags and moved on to our final destination.
