Hello Winter: Why do we use green and red for this time of the year? Mythology and traditions that are older than we think + All my Yule/Christmas looks + sneak peek of forthcoming seasonal special

in GEMS7 months ago (edited)
We had our first snowfall just two weeks ago... It's almost WINTER! ❄️ The closing of the year is always a special time whether you are religious or not. I know it's a hard time for many too but I'm going to tell you there is always a reason to celebrate it, even if you are Mr. Scrooge! And the answer is LIGHT🕯️. Keep on reading, please tell me at the end which outfit you liked the most and I'll upvote all meaningful comments with proof of reading, as always, as I do love your engagement so keep it coming!

During the post I'll share past and present Yule "looks" let me know at the end which one was your favourite.

Traditions that are older than we think

Yule is another word for the Winter's solstice which has been celebrated for thousands of years and many cultures as it's the time of "turning" were light starts to return. It's usually celebrated around the 21st of December and linked to many celebrations including Christmas. I will delve in more detail in forthcoming posts but I wanted to share different Christmas looks I've done (and the one I'll be wearing this year) and explain the reason why these colours are so deeply rooted to Winter Celebrations. There will be more posts with Winter theme but this first one is to explain the use of red and green this time of the year.

I'm a December Child... the year comes to an end and I'm about to have completed another spin around the sun too (mid month). The closing of the year is for me a special time because I make balance of my resolutions, I forgive myself for all those I have failed to fulfil and I renew my vows to try my best again. Whatever you celebrate (Pagan Yule, Christmas, Hannukah...) Winter's Solstice approaches with its shortest day and longest night. But as I have stated many times before, Winter is also the time where "light" is reborn. Once cold Winter starts day will be gradually longer. This is why ancient cultures have worshipped this time with symbols of evergreen (trees, holy) and light (bornfires, candles, burning logs). This celebration would be later rebranded as "Christmas" but still keep many of its pagans origins like the tree, the Yule log, candles and so on. If you want to revisit previous articles I've written about Yule, I'll try to make a summary when the "day" approaches but this post is to show my past and present "Yule" looks.

Why do we use red and green this time of the year?

Red, green, white and gold are the typical colours usually associated with this time of the year. White represents the light and gold represents the Sun returning. Green can be found in Evergreen trees (fir, pine) and bushes (mistletoe and Holy and Ivy).
Don't you know that carol "The Holly and the Ivy”?

Enduring green has been always venerated as a symbol of "hope" and endurance through the winter. Red is linked to Holy's fruits. Of course Christmas made evergreen a metaphor of "eternal life" and red "the blood" and though I'm not religious I love the time of the year but most to trace back the origins of the folklore and mythology behind it. There is no reference about the date of the birth of Christ, but the date has been celebrated as the "RETURN OF LIGHT" or "RETURN OF HOPE" way before such religion even existed, and the way current celebrations have included the "Ways of Nature" in its symbols fascinate me as someone that loves mythology, legends and stories.
Even in Ancient Rome there was the festival of Saturnalia where boughs of evergreen, ornaments in green and red called "sigillaria". Even Ancient Egypt hung palm leaves in honour to Ra (God of Sun) around Winter's Solstice.

It's in Holly boughs. The spiky leaves of holly were revealed to repel evil spirits and newborn babies used to be sprinkled with "holly water" but Holly referred to the Germanic Goddess of the Underworld "Holle". Mistletoe and holly (masculine and feminine respectively) represented the Sacred Marriage at this time of year with the re-birth of the Sun/Son. This evolved in the world "Holy" as Sacred afterwards.
Trees would be also brought in side the homes of old European pagans as a token of evergreen and also to use as wood during the winter. Sometimes they were hung as chandeliers with ornaments. In Lavonia (currently Latvia and Estonia) the first official Christmas trees were at the village square and decorated with edible apples and nuts.

I hope that you are starting to be aware that our current celebrations date way back than we ever thought and whether you have faith or not we should always celebrate that LIGHT and HOPE are returning as it's been done for thousands and thousands of years.

Fire, candles, burning logs, LIGHT, they're all still present in current traditions... and no matter if you're Christian, Jew, Atheist, Pagan, Agnostic.... WE ALL HAVE A REASON TO CELEBRATE THIS TIME... as long as Earth keeps on spinning because HOPE is a beautiful thing.

A lot of hope and light for 2022 then!
I find the one with the red pointy hat the most adorable

So you understand now when I say it is not only about christmas. By the way I have totally misplaced my red hat lol but when I find it i may make felt pins with white circles to make it look like Amanita 🍄

My favourite song during Christmas is called "Silence, the kids are sleeping", and no, don't look for it online, I just made it up hahaha!

Please Priscilla don't put me on the naughty list, I need my presents!! 😄

Did you know about the red color for santa being linked to Coca cola ads?

The orange hair look great!

Haha you should totally make that xmas song now lol. Oh Santa, Father Frost, Nicholas... Dunno been a good girl but Santa is a troll. Yes I knew about the red and white Santa ad, nut those colours were already popular in representations of other Father Christmas figures. Red initially was abem a representation of the feminine power (red fruits) lol 😂 and green masculine because of the "Holly King" BUT all four colors red, green, white and gold were and will be leaving linked to winter symbols then and now.
Orange hair is a wig. My hair is blonde lol 🤣 I fancy a change but I am allergic so only hair chalks that wash off me i am oooold, today is my bday, so it should be white now, but its a crazy mix of gold and whites now. Patiently waiting for my moon hair forever

Happy Birthday my dear friend, I hope that you are having a delightful evening, are you a Capricorn?

Cheers and take care!

I am a Sagittarius, I spent it "up in the clouds" as I'm told to be usually hahah :) I'll post about it. And thanks!

I'm guessing the movie is Scrooged. My favorite of your looks is the one of you in the green stocking cap, because you look like a little Christmas elf.

I love that movie and in fact I rewatched it last Christmas. But in this case it is another adaptation of Christmas Carol that was me in the 80s as well. Another revealing clue would be that not all actors are humans. Okay I think that makes it a very obvious solution. My birthday is at 16th and I hope to have it ready by then. I Simmer things so slowly

Is it Mickey's Christmas Carol? Our birthdays are only a week apart, mine is the 23rd.

And happy birthday in advance to you and all December Children

Thank you, Happy Birthday to you as well!

It is The Muppets Christmas Carol, by Henson company (how surprising lol)

Reference to Dickens: A Christmas Carol. Liked this year's best followed by 1st photo at top of post. 3rd goes to last photo.

My favorite song is What Child is This/Greensleves or Silver Bells.

Yes indeed it is a reference to a Christmas Carol. It is from one film adaptation that was made in the 80s and some of the actors are not humans. That is the biggest clue. I hope to have it ready in a few days. I already recorded Greensleeves not long ago if you scroll back on my blog you will find it so I'm pretty sure I have your lovely feedback then. The other one I think is Carol of the Bells which by the way was not originally a Christmas song either but an Ukrainian traditional song cold the bountiful evening. I made an instrumental fashion a while back I hope you like it

This one I like too, but Silver Bells is a different song. Have a thing for bells at Christmas. I listened to the Carol one on the playlist you posted. I don't think Greensleeves was on it...

Greensleeves is not on the Xmas list because I played the origina l non Xmas version. Theseare theorifinal lyrics on the song

I will check silver bells them 💗🔔🔔🔔

My favourite is the second image but I'll admit to being a bit of a sucker for cloaks. I also quite like the playful nature of the short sleeved red and green outfit in the forest.

I kind of knew about the history behind the colours but it was interesting to read it again and be reminded of stuff I'd forgotten and learn some new stuff :)

The colours I associate with this time of year is generally blue, it's summer and we go swimming a lot XD

Yes I guess it all makes more sense in the northern hemisphere but I miss swimming and blue sea and skies. Every season is magical for different reasons but they wanted to make a post to highlights the whether you hold any believe or not, at the closing of the year nature itself provides a reason to be joyful, light Hope and New beginnings. And yes I love clothes too, that is likely my favorite as well

Stunning photos and beautiful music as always!

And a lovely post. Thank you so much for making the effort to write such high quality stuff.

Btw - inspired by one of your previous posts I have now had chestnuts this year!

They were lovely.. though I didn't know* I was meant to pierce them before putting them in the oven so I made quite an exciting explosion! It was loud and messy but no damage or harm done and now I know!!!

*ok ok I didn't read the instructions properly!
