The conservation of the environment and of living beings in danger of extinction is not an easy task, there are too many factors that can hinder it, and that is why having the opportunity to meet a project that tries to save animals gives you the real dimension of what this difficult but very necessary work is.

La conservación del ambiente y de los seres vivos en peligro de extinción no es una tarea fácil, hay demasiados factores que pueden obstaculizarla, y por eso tener la oportunidad de conocer un proyecto que trata de salvar animales te brinda la real dimensión de lo que es este difícil pero muy necesario trabajo.

Some time ago, when I was working as a reporter, I ended up in Santa Maria, a town in southern Venezuela between Apure and Bolivar states, on the banks of the Orinoco River. I was assigned to cover a special event, the release of thousands of Arrau turtles (Podocnemis expansa), an activity that is carried out annually to contribute to the increase of this species in its natural habitat.

Hace tiempo, cuando trabajaba como reportera, fui a parar a Santa María, una población al sur de Venezuela entre los estados Apure y Bolívar, a orillas del río Orinoco. Me asignaron la cobertura de un evento especial, la liberación de miles de tortugas Arrau (Podocnemis expansa), una actividad que se realiza anualmente para contribuir al aumento de ejemplares de esta especie en su hábitat natural.

It takes about 45 minutes by boat from Puerto Páez, a town in southern Apure State, to reach the Arrau Turtle Wildlife Refuge and Protected Area.

Para llegar al lugar donde se encuentra el Refugio de Fauna Silvestre y Zona Protectora de la Tortuga Arrau son unos 45 minutos en lancha desde Puerto Páez, población que queda al sur del estado Apure.

Arrau turtles are in critical danger of extinction, the causes are several: illegal hunting, consumption of their eggs and pollution of their habitat are some of them. Hunting has been prohibited by law since 1962, but even so, it has not been possible to stabilize their population.

Las tortugas Arrau están en peligro crítico de extinción, las causas son varias: cacería ilegal, consumo de sus huevos y contaminación de su hábitat son algunas de ellas. Por ley está prohibida su caza desde 1962, pero aún así no se ha podido estabilizar su población.

This conservation program is the one that has been active in the country for the longest time; it has been carried out since 1989 and many entities participate, both from the State and NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations), as well as the people of the nearby communities. On the day I attended, about 20,000 baby turtles were released. They should be about one year old, measure about 14 cm and weigh 400 grams.

Este programa de conservación es el que más tiempo lleva activo en el país, se realiza desde 1989 y participan muchos entes, tanto del Estado como ONG (Organizaciones No Gubernamentales), así como también la gente de las comunidades cercanas. En la jornada a la que asistí fueron liberadas unas 20.000 tortuguitas, que deben tener aproximadamente un año, medir unos 14 cm y pesar 400 gr.

In this part of the river, known as Middle Orinoco, is where there are more specimens of this reptile, which is the freshwater chelonian that has the largest hard shell in the world, being able to measure more than one meter and weigh 60 kg (females are larger than males). The work done by this conservation program consists of collecting eggs from nests that are in vulnerable places and taking them to the nurseries that they have arranged, when they reach the ideal size that I mentioned before, they are released and hopefully many of them can reach 15 years of life, which is when they begin to reproduce.

En esta parte del río, conocida como Orinoco Medio, es donde más ejemplares hay de este reptil, que es el quelonio de agua dulce que posee el caparazón duro más grande del mundo, pudiendo llegar a medir más de un metro y pesar 60 Kg (las hembras son más grandes que los machos). El trabajo que hace este programa de conservación consiste en recolectar huevos de nidos que están en lugares vulnerables y llevarlos a las guarderías que tienen dispuestas, cuando alcanzan el tamaño ideal que mencioné anteriormente, se liberan y con suerte muchas de ellas podrán llegar los 15 años de vida, que es cuando comienzan a reproducirse.

On the day of the release, the turtles are taken to the river bank and all the participants of the event help to push them into the water, it is a beautiful and exciting spectacle to see how they are submerged and gradually move away.

El día de la liberación llevan a las tortugas a la orilla del río y todos los participantes del acto ayudan a empujarlas hacia el agua, es un bonito y emocionante espectáculo ver cómo se van sumergiendo y alejando poco a poco.

The conservation program also has activities for environmental education, giving talks in schools and communities to disseminate the importance of protecting these animals for the ecological balance. Undoubtedly, raising people's awareness is key to save them from extinction.

El programa de conservación cuenta además con actividades para la educación ambiental, dictan charlas en escuelas y comunidades para divulgar la importancia que tiene para el equilibrio ecológico proteger a estos animales. Sin duda concientizar a las personas es clave para salvarlos de la extinción.

This task is not only carried out in Apure; in other Venezuelan states such as Amazonas, Anzoátegui, Portuguesa and Barinas there are more hatcheries, in total there are about 12 throughout the country.

Esta tarea no sólo se realiza en Apure, en otros estados de Venezuela como Amazonas, Anzoátegui, Portuguesa y Barinas hay más criaderos, en total son unos 12 en todo el país.

This refuge has 17,431 hectares, we were able to see some of its spaces, such as the area where the containers with turtles recently hatched from their eggs are located.

Este refugio posee 17.431 hectáreas, pudimos conocer algunos de sus espacios, como el área donde se encuentran los recipientes con tortugas recién salidas de sus huevos.

At the end of the activity, the boat took us back to Puerto Paez and during the trip I enjoyed the beautiful landscapes of this secluded place, very rich in natural resources.

Al finalizar la actividad la lancha nos llevó de regreso a Puerto Páez y en el recorrido disfruté de los bellos paisajes que tiene este apartado lugar, muy rico en recursos naturales.

Hopefully the efforts that are being made will contribute to take the Arrau turtles off the list of species in extinction. In the 34 years of this conservation program, more than one million specimens have been released, but more are needed every day....

Ojalá los esfuerzos que se hacen contribuyan a sacar a las tortugas Arrau de la lista de especies en extición. En los 34 años que tiene este programa de conservación se han liberado a más de un millón de ejemplares, pero cada día hacen falta más...
